The purpose of a palatal expander is to widen the upper portion of the jaw by slowly adjusting the molars. Once the palatal expander is set to the desired width, it will remain in place for a few months to make sure that the jaw stays in place. Although it may vary from person to person, most usually feel slight pressure on their teeth throughout the widening process.
Palatal expanders are often used when the jaw does not have enough space for the teeth to move into their correct position. If necessary, your orthodontist will discuss with you the need for a palatal expander, and your options prior to treatment.
